Professional Experience

Melanie has been practicing law since 2003. Before joining Lakhani Campea LLP, she gained more than fifteen years of experience as in-house counsel for several Canadian mining companies. In these roles, she provided comprehensive guidance on all facets of project development, commercial and operational matters, including Human Resources.

Employment Law Practice

Melanie advises, represents, and advocates for both employers and employees across a broad spectrum of employment law issues.

Employer Representation

Melanie serves as a strategic advisor for employer clients, supporting HR teams and guiding them through each phase of the employment relationship. Her areas of expertise include drafting employment agreements, performance management and disciplinary actions, advising on accommodation and leaves, and structuring termination packages. She also provides counsel on employment-related considerations in business sales. With extensive negotiating experience, Melanie represents employers in all types of employment litigation.

Employee Advocacy

Melanie offers coaching and advice to employees regarding offers of employment, medical accommodation, and return to work processes. She represents employees in wrongful and constructive dismissal claims, as well as in applications pertaining to Human Rights and workplace health and safety violations.

Workplace Investigations and Training

Melanie’s skills extend to conducting workplace investigations for employers. She also delivers workplace training focused on conflict resolution, harassment prevention, regulatory compliance, and policy implementation.

Personal Interests & Education

When not practicing law, Melanie loves spending time with her family, sailing on Lake Ontario, improving her tennis game, and traveling to places unknown.

Melanie is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and a former member in good standing of the Law Societies of British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
